The Cavern Beatles

The Cavern Beatles are a band of musicians from Liverpool dedicated to keeping the sound of the Beatles alive.

The band are constantly on tour around the world, and are in great demand for the accuracy of their portrayal of the most famous pop group ever, both in sound and vision. They are one of only a handful of bands worldwide that perform their entire show as a four piece completely live, without any kind of tapes, sequencers or digital backing tracks for the later period material. Songs like StrawberryFields Forever and Penny Lane are performed with 2 keyboards, each replicating the complex sounds on the records with great accuracy.

Underpinning the whole sound of the band is the Hofner 500/1 Violin Bass.

Two of the most recognisable features of Paul McCartney as a Beatle was that he played a Hofner 500/1 Violin Bass, and that he played it left-handed.

The Hofner gives The Cavern Beatles, the essential “look” and “sound”.  There is absolutely no substitute.

Current Cavern Beatles bassman, Chris O’Neill, loves his Hofner.  Naturally right handed, Chris learnt to play as a lefty for his role in the band.  He originally played the part of the young George Harrison in the 1994 movie, “Backbeat”.

“Trying to play your instrument the other way round really is a difficult thing to do.  The light weight and great balance of the 500/1 makes the whole process slightly less difficult.  No wonder Paul chose to use it when he could have used any.  It looks and sounds great, and it’s totally comfortable to play.”
