Michael League

Michael League is a 2-time Grammy Award-winning bassist, guitarist, producer, composer, arranger, songwriter, label owner, studio owner, and bandleader based out of Brooklyn, New York.

Michael runs the instrumental music ensemble Snarky Puppy, whose grass-roots approach to the changing music industry has met major critical and commercial success, as well as two Grammy awards in three years. His new band, Bokanté, is a mixture of West African music, blues, and rock with a cast of all-star musicians from around the world. Aside from leading these groups, Michael maintains a heavy schedule in multiple capacities. As an instrumentalist and producer, he has worked with a diverse range of artists in pop (David Crosby, Laura Mvula, Lalah Hathaway, Joe Walsh), gospel (Kirk Franklin, Walter Hawkins, Marvin Sapp, Israel Houghton), jazz (Ari Hoenig, Wayne Krantz, Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke), and world (Salif Keïta, Eliades Ochoa of the Buena Vista Social Club, Susana Baca, Carlos Malta, Väsen) music. Michael’s efforts as a bandleader and bassist earned him the cover spot on the August 2014 issue of Bass Player Magazine, the largest bass publication in the world. He also is the CEO and founder of the pioneering independent record label GroundUP Music.

Michael is passionately committed to music education and outreach, having given clinics and masterclasses at over 200 schools on 5 continents. He is active as a guest speaker in international music business panels and works regularly with non-profit organizations in an effort to better serve the community at large through the arts.
